SPD visits the Asia Pacific Development Center on Disability
Bangkok, April 8th: SPD organized for the second years students a fieldtrip to the Asia Pacific Development Center on Disabilities (APCD). The organization does outstanding advocacy work in Thailand in favor of those affected by disabilities. It operates on the principle that people affected with disabilities are not only recipients of aid, but can be actors of change. With APCD, it is not only a rhetorical argument: more than half the staff is affected by some form of disability.
The afternoon was an opportunity for the student to realize that disabilities can be an asset, and more broadly that one cannot claim to help a group without some knowledge of the issues this group actually faced. Moreover, a visit of the APCD facilities was an opportunity to visualize what “accessibility” means in architecture and design, and how buildings can be made to be welcoming to all.
